MacDonnell Group’s Partnership with Institut Maritime du Quebec (IMQ) moves towards Improved Security Training in Canadian Ports
QUEBEC – The Institut Maritime du Quebec (IMQ) in Rimouski, Quebec has signed a partnership agreement with the MacDonnell Group of Halifax, Nova Scotia. The agreement will allow both Institutions ™ to offer maritime security programs at the IMQ Facility to provide on demand, on-site training for the Quebec region. MacDonnell and IMQ programs have been developed in accordance with the International Ship and Port Security (ISPS) Code and the Transport Canada Marine Transport Security Regulations.
The agreement will allow the Institut Maritime du Quebec and MacDonnell Group to achieve port and maritime security training objectives by Canadian regulations for ports, vessels, and ferry operators while contributing to a standardization of a quality curriculum.
“We are very pleased our agreement with IMQ,” said Ralston MacDonnell, company president. “We have similar partnerships with Georgian College in Ontario and the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT). Partnerships like this help us all contribute to national training standards that make it easier for industry to meet security obligations.”
Port and maritime security has become a significant element of operations throughout the marine transportation sector. MacDonnell’s standardized security training programs allow port operators, shippers and regulators to develop employees who have a common base of knowledge. As the dominant port security training provider in North America, MacDonnell and training partners have invested in the most comprehensive and current curriculum for all maritime and port security regulations. Well trained security personnel help reduce disruptions and increase efficiency in the supply chain.
“All training initiatives encouraging the improvement of maritime safety and security are always welcome” said Larbi Yahia Project Manager within IMQ.

Port Canaveral adds Nine to CPE CERTIFIED PORT EXECUTIVE™ Alumni
22 November 2013
Port Canaveral, Florida welcomed thirteen alumni to the CPE CERTIFIED PORT EXECUTIVE™ program last week. Something that individualized this CPE CERTIFIED PORT EXECUTIVE™ course from all others is that the majority of the alumni were from the administration at Port Canaveral. They joined David Perley, Senior Director of Construction and Infrastructure, who graduated from the Miami course in May 2013. This was an excellent example of creating a port management team that can help the port operate in an efficient and effective manner.
Port Canaveral first started as a cargo and vessel port for both the military and commercial use in 1953. It continued to develope strongly, played a role in the space program and has been able to successully become one of the world’s leading cruise ship ports. Port Canaveral has an admirable history of adaptabilty that is becoming more valued in the evolution of the port and transportation industry. Their strong history clearly displays a dedication to professional development of the port administration and workforce.
By adding the CPE CERTIFIED PORT EXECUTIVE™ to many of their managers, Port Canaveral is giving their management the knowledge individually and increasing their abilityto make a more effective contribution to the organization.
Others were in the program as well, including management from the Port of Tampa, Biloxi and Palm Beach.
